Give no Chase

Not the type to chase tragedy down,
Hogtie the torment and stare, gloating,
into a boxy jaw littered with taloned teeth.
No, nor one of those who run from its thudding paws,
Drumming double-time on packed earth,
Snarling at the heels of its prey,
Howling only to watch them falter in fear.
I, instead, draw my lips tight,
Meet sunken eyes, level; wary,
And set down a bowl for it to drink.
